The above picture is actually mine of my oldest daughter at 21 ½ weeks so in my second trimester of pregnancy. I’ve been surprised at some of the conversations I’ve recently had regarding abortion with other Christians. On certain topics, I believe there should be no doubt on where a follower of Jesus stands.
If you plug into your search engine the definition of pro-choice it will tell you that it means advocating legalized abortion. Therefore, by its definition, if you are pro-choice you are pro-abortion.
Also, abortion by definition is the deliberate and premeditated termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.
So, my daughter, as shown in the above picture, at 21 ½ weeks where you can clearly see as a baby with her head, neck, nose, mouth and body clearly visible was in that range of high abortion rates.
In 2015, 64.3% of abortions were surgical at 13 weeks or more with 8.8% of abortions were surgically performed after 13 weeks. With new laws coming into effect allowing women to abort right up till birth, I’m sure this number has increased.
It’s one thing to say you’re pro-choice but it’s another to say you’re pro-choice knowing how a baby is violently killed. Check out this video where a doctor who used to perform abortions goes into detail about how a baby is surgically aborted.
Too many people build their belief system not on the word of God but base it on their own feelings and experiences. This ALWAYS gets us into trouble because…
Jeremiah 17:9
The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked.
It is for this very reason that God tells us in Ephesians 6:14 that we must put on God’s breastplate of righteousness to cover our deceitful hearts. In that passage it doesn’t say our righteousness but God’s righteousness so regardless of our feelings or experiences we must always follow what the Bible says is right and what is wrong.
So here are 7 reasons why a Christian can't be pro-choice.
1) Do Not Murder
I chose the obvious one first. It’s number 7 of the 10 commandments.
Deuteronomy 5:17
Do not murder.
If that wasn’t clear enough God also tells us…
Genesis9:5
Murder is forbidden.
The definition of murder is the premeditated killing of one human being by another. Honestly, I don’t know what else to say about this – if God forbids us to do something, I don’t think we should do it or advocate others to do it. Sin leads to death and in
Luke 17:1 Jesus says,
There will always be temptations to sin,
but how terrible it will be for the person who does the tempting.
So, when you say you’re pro-choice you are in effect coming in agreement with the killing of the innocent. You are letting others believe it’s okay to have an abortion. That is tempting others to sin.
And really where does it end? It’s now “legal” to euthanize the elderly and now our unborn…
2) Me, myself and I
What I’ve heard and read for the reasons for abortions, well they all revolve around self. In a 2004 study, the top reasons for abortions were I’m not ready for a baby, I can’t afford a baby, I’m done having children and I don’t want to be a single mother.
I, I, I and me, me, me. What a self-centered society we live in.
It’s time for a reality check.
Psalm 106:35-38
Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs. They worshiped their idols, and this led to their downfall. They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder.
Deuteronomy 5:8-9
Do not make idols of any kind,
whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. You must never worship or bow down to them.
Our north American culture loves to worship self. We’ve made ourselves our own idols. From the feminist movement to New Age and other false religions people have exalted themselves and appointed themselves as their own god. Abortion is a form of idol worship with the worst results - the killing of the innocent.
There are numerous verses in the Bible where God warns us not to sacrifice our children to false gods and idols.
Leviticus 18:21
Do not give any of your children as a
sacrifice to Melech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.
So, in effect when a woman has an abortion, she is putting herself above that of her child. She is sacrificing her child for the idol of self. God tells us this would happen during the end times.
2 Timothy 3:1-53
In the last days, there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control; they will be cruel and have no interest in what is good.
3)Are You on The Right Side?
We are in a spiritual war where there are only two sides and no non-combatants. You are either on God’s side or Satan’s side. If you think you can play on both sides think again!
1 Corinthians 10:20-21
And I don’t want any of you to be partners with demons. You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.
God clearly tells us in Scripture that a baby is a human at the time of conception:
Psalm 139:13-16
Jeremiah 1:5
Genesis 9:6
These 7 reasons why abortion is against God’s law clearly shows that abortion is not God’s design but Satan’s.
God doesn’t see in grey. God sees in black and white. Right and wrong. Moral and immoral. When a Christian is pro-choice, they’re playing in the grey area and you won’t find God there. God doesn’t care about our excuses. He cares that we listen and obey His Word.
We are called to be holy priests…
1 Peter 2:9
But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God’s holy
nation, his very own possession. This is
so you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the
darkness into his wonderful light.
We are to glorify God in all we do. Is advocating the right to choose whether one life is precious and the other not glorifying God?
4) We are Called to Defend
Proverbs 31:8-9
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for
those who are perishing. Yes, speak up
for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.
We are called to be a voice for the helpless. We are called to help those in need. God has given each and every one of His children a purpose but most of us are not fulfilling that purpose. Pray to God and ask for your purpose! It might be your purpose to help make new laws to help young mothers thrive with an infant. It might be working directly with women who are struggling. God might want you to be a foster parent. We need to be a voice for the helpless and sometimes that includes the mother as well as the baby.
Although the percentage is very small there are pregnancies that are the result of rape/incest. But even in those circumstances, we should not be willing to sacrifice the innocent. The victim's pain does not change the reality that the person in the womb is made in God's image. The circumstances of conception nor the sin of the father nullifies the innocence of the baby. In no way is justice served by killing the unborn child for the crimes of the father. Punish the rapist, not the baby!
And regardless of how the baby was conceived God tells us ALL children are gifts from Him!
Psalm 127:3
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are are a reward from him.
5) Evil Runs Unchecked
Edmund Burke is quoted as saying “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
In Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus tells the parable about the 2 servants each given money to take care of while their master was gone. By the time the master comes back the one servant has doubled what he was originally given while the other servant had hidden his money and didn’t do anything with it.
Now this parable speaks about being prepared for the coming of Christ. We are not to keep to ourselves what God has given us; we are called to bear fruit. The servant who hid the money was only thinking of himself. He had hoped to play it safe but as you read the parable he is judged for his self-centeredness.
If you have given your life to Jesus, if he is truly your master, then you must obey him. You cannot avoid or give excuses why you’re not doing and following God’s will.
Our God is a God of justice (Psalm 11:7) so when we say nothing justice is not done. By speaking up for what is right, we’re doing something and we are not being slothful or lazy with the time God has given us.
Proverbs 24:11-12
Don’t try to avoid responsibility by saying you didn’t know about
it. For God knows all hearts, and he sees
you. He keeps watch over your soul, and
he knows you knew! And he will judge all
people according to what they have done.
6)The WWJD?
Yes, we need to answer the question: What would Jesus do?
Everything that Jesus did while here on earth was done according to God’s will (Hebrews 10:7, John 12:49). Jesus lived a life in complete obedience to God.
Jesus didn’t sugarcoat his teachings nor did he pander to the people. In John 6:41-70 we are shown that after a particular teaching about who he is many disciples deserted him. Jesus didn’t go back on his word to get them back. Jesus never compromised on the truth.
We must stand up for God’s truth in this upside-down world where bad is now good, good is bad and telling the truth is a big no-no.
We are to show compassion to those that are suffering and to help in any way we can but we are not to join them in their sin. We cannot compromise and tell them what they are doing is okay. We cannot sit by and let them believe there are no consequences for their sin.
Jesus loves children (Mark 10:13-16)! Do you believe he would go against God’s will and be pro-choice?
There is a term called “The Inverted Gospel” and it’s basically when you try to have Jesus follow you instead of the other way around. As a follower of Jesus aka, a Christian we should always be following Jesus’ lead and be submissive to him.
To be blunt...if you say you're a Christian and yet believe abortion is okay, under certain circumstances, who’s following who?
7) Created in God’s Image
The Bible tells us that we are created in God’s image, we are His special creation and that we are valued.
Matthew 10:29-31
Not even a sparrow, worth only half a penny, can fall to the ground
without your Father knowing it. And the
very hairs on your head are all numbered.
So, don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to him than a whole flock of sparrows.
We are the creation and not the creator so who are we to destroy the life God has created?
God tells us in…
Genesis 9:5
Murder is forbidden. Animals that kill
people must die, and any person who murders must be killed. Yes, you must execute anyone who murders another
person, for to kill a person is to kill a living being made in God’s image.
God is saying that it’s a sin to kill another person because that person is made in God’s image. We are even told to kill animals that dare kill a person in God’s image so how do you think God feels about abortion?
I know there are problems and circumstances when it comes to some women having children but there is always another solution to the problem other than abortion.
1 Corinthians 10:13
But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it.
So please if you’re talking to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and they say they’re pro-choice give them the above reasons why it’s an oxymoron to put Christian and pro-choice in the same sentence!

I pray this teaching convicts you that God finds life precious and that it’s up to Him and only Him to decide when we are born and when we die.
Shelley
I completely agree with this. I often here the argument of rape or incest. And while I am very empathetic to situations such as that, I personally, as a Christian, made up my mind a long time ago that if anything like that happened to me I would not murder the baby because of someone’s evil actions.
It is a you stated, you have to choose a side. I choose God’s. Always.

Hi Shelley,
Yes, I decided the same as you. The Bible says that children are gifts from God. Who am I to refuse His gift? When I read about the stats and how unfeeling as a society we are becoming towards our unborn and our elderly it breaks my heart. I pray in Jesus’ name that His people would come together in prayer and change the hearts of our leaders!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Shelley!
